"I don't want to move" is a statement I hear often during Alexander Technique lessons. People feel so good, especially after leaving the massage table, they don't want to take a step, or even move their head. They don't want to ruin their newfound open, decompressed, expansive, relaxed state. And who could blame them?...

The Alexander Technique And Exercising

By | November 25th, 2011|Categories: Alexander Technique Posts|Tags: , |

As Alexander Technique teachers and students know, there are no right positions, only right principles. Let's add: There are no right movements, only right principles. Jogging, sit-ups, push-ups, and pull-ups aren't intrinsically good or bad. It's not the what of what we do, it's the how. The Alexander Technique teaches how to move in an optimal way-whatever we're doing. The benefits derived from proper exercise are well-documented. Just exercise some common sense and apply the principles of the Alexander Technique. Use the Alexander Technique before, during, and after exercising.

"A correct position or posture indicates a fixed position, and a person held to a fixed position cannot grow, as we understand growth. The correct position today cannot be the correct position a week later for any person who is advancing in the work of reeducation and coordination. F.M. Alexander- Constructive Conscious Control of the Individual During Alexander Technique lessons, people frequently sit up straight or move their head around and ask: is this right?" I answer differently in different situations, but the real answer might be: No. I don't say that because the...
