How does the Alexander Technique qualify as bait-n-switch? It doesn’t. The Alexander Technique is reversed bait-n-switch. What is reversed bait-n-switch?  I don’t know because I just created the term, but please read on.

Here is a short description of the usual bait-and-switch:

A sales tactic in which a customer is attracted by the advertisement of a low-priced item but is then encouraged to buy a higher-priced one.

Here is an example of the Alexander Technique teacher reversed bait-n-switch.

The bait: Improve Your Posture Now!  The switch: Acquire Tools for Efficient Use of Your Mind/Body That Will Last a Lifetime. The value has increased, but the price remains the same. Plus, Alexander Technique students get to keep the bait, which is their improved posture. They get to keep the bait, the rod, the reel, the hook, the line, the sinker, the fish, the boat, and their new easeful posture.

Of course the bait of achieving good posture and it’s related benefits is valuable, as is eliminating back pain, neck pain, and reducing stress.

Improve breathing, reduce tension, decrease back pain and neck pain, improve appearance, improve performance; the Alexander Technique bait. Tools for positive change, an expanded viewpoint, skills for replacing unwanted habits, increased calmness, better relationships with yourself and others, and an uplifted mood; the Alexander Technique switch.

The Alexander Technique reverse bait-n-switch is a win-win-win situation.

1. Alexander Technique students win because they receive something of value they can use their entire lives, anytime they want.

2. Alexander Technique teachers win because they are giving something of value students can use their entire lives, anytime they want.

3. Alexander Technique students’ family, friends, and everyone else wins because the person who was slumping, or was in pain, is now empowered with tools to help themselves. They take people in their inner and outer circles up along for the ride.

Alexander Technique students often do the switching themselves. They start Alexander Technique lessons for posture improvement or pain relief. Their posture improves and their pains get relieved, and they then realize the Alexander technique is helping them in ways they hadn’t previously imagined, and continue studying for these new reasons. They were baited, and now they’ve switched.
