What is the Alexander Technique?

The Alexander Technique is difficult to categorize or define, partly  because it helps people in diverse ways. However, most people seek Alexander Technique lessons for three main reasons:

1. They want to improve their posture.

2. They want neck and back pain relief.

3. They want to have better breathing, a stronger voice, more energy, and  improved functioning of their entire body.

F.M. Alexander

The Alexander Technique was developed by F.M. Alexander (1869-1955.) Alexander was an actor having vocal problems. The advice from the medical community was “rest”. When that didn’t work he embarked upon a journey of self-discovery, his goal being to resume his acting career.

After years of investigation, he realized that his problems were caused by what he was doing with his entire body as he recited. As he taught himself to use his body/mind differently, the strain on his vocal mechanism and his  body diminished, and he was again able to speak strongly and resonantly. He also noticed positive changes that were happening to his entire system as he made these specific, beneficial changes in his breathing and voice.

The Alexander Technique

People sought out F.M. Alexander and his technique, known as the Alexander Technique, for a wide variety of issues including improving posture, reducing back pain and neck pain, and enhanced breathing.

Alexander observed many positive side-effects brought about by decreasing excess tension, including improved posture neck tension reduction, and back pain relief.

The Alexander Technique teaches how to recognize and decrease neck tension, and the subsequent de-compression of the entire spine. When you apply the principles of the Alexander Technique posture improves, neck tension diminishes, back pain subsides.

Alexander Technique Benefits

You will look and feel taller, because the habitual shrinking and compressing stops. Your posture improves but you don’t have military posture with all that extra rigidity.

The Alexander Technique lets you feel differently as well, because when you are more upright and expanded you feel both calmer and more confident. Your breathing becomes fuller, which has it’s own benefits.

As you present yourself in a more upright way, you may notice a beneficial affect on your mood and attitude as well. People say that the Alexander Technique gives you an over-all sense of well-being. A ‘virtuous cycle’ has begun.

One learns the Alexander Technique by taking lessons from a certified Alexander Technique teacher. Then, you then do it at home, and everywhere else.
